Course Outline
Do we know what we want to say in our paintings before engaging in the process? Are we aware of why we are drawn to a particular subject or reference material? Is painting just a slavish reproduction of a photo reference? We will focus on exploring more experimental starts in developing our painting ideas, as well as creating a more personal interpretation using various water based media. Media possibilities include acrylics, watercolour, watercolour crayons, inks, gauche, charcoal and collage materials. Attention will be given to a number of techniques, including all prima, transparent glazing, lifting, stencils, pouring, monotype print, transfers and collage. Day 1 and 2 will focus on demonstration and application of various techniques. Day 3 and 4 are dedicated to developing painting ideas using these techniques. Bring your own photo references and/or sketches and studies, but do not bring calendar images or magazine photos. The workshop will include demonstrations, as well as personal instruction and critiques.
