Our Whistler: Celebrating our History | Another fundraising success!

The Whistler Arts Council Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the 27th anniversary fundraiser, Our Whistler: Celebrating Our History, was a great success raising money for Whistler Arts Council programs, including the Whistler Children’s Art Festival, ArtWalk, ARTrageous and the Whistler Art Workshops on the Lake.

The sold-out event took place at the Four Seasons Resort on Friday, March 6, 2009, attracting a variety of people with connections to the Whistler community and featuring 10 long-time locals revisiting “Toad Hall” days and sharing their Whistler stories.

Bob Daniels spoke about chasing love to South America and back with his last stop on a bus in Function Junction. Legendary ski patroller Cathy Jewett reminded the crowd to love what you do and do what you love, even if it means little money and a few ski injuries. Jim McConkey joined everyone by his own medium of choice in order to show us that real extreme skiing means no snow machines, skis as thin as toothpicks and video cameras as large as TVs. Maureen Douglas had everyone laughing as she reminisced about her evolution through First Night and finally finding herself executing the biggest event Whistler will ever see. Toulouse (Terry Spence) divulged the secrets of Toad Hall, and the importance of après ski when the bar meant beer and warmth while your only other option was the drafty log cabin you called home. Every speaker reminisced about “the good old days” and had the audience in stitches. Kristen Robinson and Scott Robertson did wonders as the MCs for the evening and shared a few stories themselves.

The next Whistler Arts Council Our Whistler: Celebrating Our History fundraiser will take place in 2010, and details will be announced later this year.

The event was sponsored by the Four Seasons Whistler, The Question Newspaper, Whistler Printing and PSAV.
